dated May 9, 1957: Nehru visits slums

Prime Minister Nehru visited some slum areas in Delhi on May 7 and received representations from the inhabitants about arrangements for their resettlement. The areas included Jumna Bazaar, Bela Road, Naibasti area and Metcalfe Road. As soon as Mr. Nehru alighted from the car, groups of men, women and children received him with folded hands. They pleaded that they be resettled in the same areas in pucca quarters. Mr. Nehru made enquiries about their difficulties and spent some time listening to the grievances of the people. He was accompanied by the Finance Minister, Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari, the Health Minister, Mr. D.P. Karmarkar, and the Chief Commissioner of Delhi, Mr. A.D. Pandit.
