More than the significance of the occasion, what came to the fore at a function organised by the Indian Red Cross Society here on Tuesday to mark World Red Cross Day was the intense factionalism between the State and district units of the Society. The units had organised two separate functions to observe the day at the same venue. They had also invited two Ministers to inaugurate their respective functions. The embarrassing anomaly was pointed out by all the invited dignitaries, including District Collector N. Ayyappan. Mr. Ayyappan, who is also the president of the Thiruvananthapram unit of the Indian Red Cross Society, made an impassionate appeal to its members to forget their differences and come together and work for the common good of society.
