Glimpses of EMS' life and times

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: An exhibition of photographs organised by the Information and Public Relations Department at the Town Hall here on the life and times of E.M.S. Nambudiripad mirror periods of the State's history that were epochal and stormy.

A visitor to the exhibition is greeted by a report in the Time magazine dated August 10, 1959 that recount the parleys in New Delhi that led to the dismissal of the first Kerala Ministry led by EMS, and international interest the event had evoked, in the aftermath of India emerging as an independent nation.

"Finally the decision Nehru had so long dreaded was made. Last week under a Constitutional provision empowering the President to assume control of any State Government that is unable to function in accordance with the Constitution, the President formally took over control of Kerala," Time report says.

More than 200-odd photographs will take you down memory lane when the CPI(M) Government led by EMS had ruled the State, Namboodiripad as a young man who defied caste stipulations and feudal family traditions to emerge as a Leftist and leader of the masses.

Historical moments in the life of EMS such as when he took oath as Chief Minister heading a Cabinet that included stalwarts such as C. Achutha Menon, Joseph Mundassery, V.R. Krishna Iyer, T. M. Thomas are documented through the photographs.

The exhibition highlights the legislations passed by the first Government such as the Land Reforms Act and the Kerala Educational Bill, considered milestones in the social history of the State.

The exhibition is being organised in connection with the Golden Jubilee of the first ministry in the State.

The exhibition will be organised in Koilandy on Friday and Saturday.
