Samaresh Jung finishes eighth

NEW DELHI: Samaresh Jung shot an impressive 584 out of 600 in air pistol but had to be content with the eighth place in a highly competitive field in the shooting World Cup at Bangkok on Tuesday.

Samaresh started on the wrong foot with a 93 in the first card, but improved thereafter with rounds of 96, 98, 99 and 98 to eventually wind up with a perfect 100.

However, in the final, in which five shooters had 584, while two had 587 and one 589, Samaresh found the 10s elusive despite a grand start. In fact, a 6.4 penultimate shot undid his good work, though the Olympic quota place or a medal was a distant dream even otherwise by that stage.

Samaresh returned a series of 10.8, 8.6, 9.7, 10.2, 8.3, 9.6 10.6, 10.3, 6.4, 10.2, for a below par total of 94.7.

Walter Lapeyre of France took the gold with a 688.7 as he followed a 587 with the best score in the final, a 101.7. Yury Dauhapolau of Belarus, who had shot a 584 like Samaresh took the bronze and the Olympic quota place as well, thanks to a 100.9 in the final, the second-best effort in the eighth member field.

There was nothing much to write about the rest of the Indian challenge, not just in men's air pistol, but in the women's sport rifle 3-position event as well.

The results: Men's air pistol: 1. Walter Lapeyre (Fra) 688.7 (587); 2. Norayr Bakhtamyan (Arm) 688.4 (589); 3. Yury Dauhapolau (Blr) 684.9 (584); 8. Samaresh Jung 678.7 (584); 56. Amanpreet Singh Jhaam 570; 65. Ronak Pandit 567. MQS: Vivek Singh 580; Deepak Sharma 574.

Women's sport rifle 3-position: 1. Lidija Mihaljlovic (Srb) 682.7 (585); 2. Daniela Peskova (Svk) 681.7 (584); 3. Wang Chengyi (Chn) 681.2 (583); 28. Meena Kumari 573; 34. Tejaswini Sawant 572; 43. Deepali Deshpande 566. MQS: Anjali Bhagwat 579; Avneet Kaur Sidhu 561.
