Sethu project: Centre files caveats

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Anticipating public interest litigation petitions from political parties and other outfits opposed to the Sethusamudram project, the Centre has filed caveats in the Madras High Court and the City Civil Court here. The caveats mandate the courts concerned to hear the Centre before passing any interim orders in relation to the project in favour of the petitioners.

Assistant Solicitor-General of India P. Wilson filed the caveats on behalf N.K. Raghupathy, Chairman of the Tuticorin Port Trust and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Sethusamudram Corporation Limited.

Individual caveats have been filed against the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Bharatiya Janata Party, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Janata Party. Two sets of caveats were filed in the High Court and the City Civil Court, as the former has the maritime jurisdiction over the project area whereas the latter comes into the picture because the Sethusamudram Corporation Limited has its headquarters here.
