Fishermen struck by lightning

KOLLAM: Eight fishermen at sea were injured when struck by lightning on Tuesday morning. The boat cracked under the impact of the lightning. There were 40 persons on board the fishing boat. They were rescued and brought ashore by other fishermen. The injured were admitted to District Hospital here. All of them are out of danger. The boat, `Prestigious,' had left the Neendakara Harbour in the morning. — Staff Reporter

One killed, 11 injured in accident

KOLLAM: One person was killed when a van lost control and rammed into a jeep. The deceased was travelling in the jeep and was identified as Ramar (42). The incident occurred at 8 a.m. on Tuesday on the National Highway at Edamon, near Punalur. Eleven others travelling in the jeep were also injured. The condition of one of them, Rajkumar, is serious and he has been admitted to Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The rest have been admitted to Punalur Government Hospital. All those travelling in the vehicle were workers of the Kallada Irrigation Project. — Staff Reporter

YMCA State meet

PATHANAMTHITTA: The 51tst State meet of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Kerala region, will be held at Catholicate College in Pathanamthitta on June 9. YMCA State vice-chairman Leby Philip Mathew said prayer meetings would be held at the association halls at Ranni (May 11), Kumbazha (May 18), Parakode (May 25) and Pathanamthitta (June 1) as a prelude to the State meet. Mr. Mathew said a 101-member organising committee had been constituted for the smooth conduct of the meet. — Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The College of Applied Sciences, an IHRD-managed State Government undertaking at Adoor, has invited applications from qualified candidates for seven posts in various departments. The vacancies for lecturers are in the departments of Electronics, Electronic Science, Computer Application, English and Management. There are vacancies for a computer programmer and a grade II technician as well. The interviews will be held from May 23 to 28, details of which are available over telephone number 04734-224076, according to a press release issued by the College here on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter
