KOLLAM: The district conference of the All-Kerala Bank Employees Federation passed a resolution stating that the policies being pursued by the United Progress Alliance Government at the Centre failed to be of help to the common man. Only a paltry sum had been allocated for the agricultural sector in the Union Budget. While the Union Government claimed that the country had registered a nine per cent economic growth, the growth in the agricultural sector was a mere two per cent. The changes being imposed on the banking sector were not in the interest of the common man. Strong agitations were required to register protest against such policies, said State general secretary of the federation V.J. Johnny, who inaugurated the conference.
Development projects
The conference called upon the authorities to complete all projects aimed at the development of the district in a time-bound manner. The gauge conversion of the Kollam-Shencotta line should be completed soon as the stopping of the Kollam-Punalur meter gauge services had affected the commuters, including bank staff. Telesboy Antony and M.M. Ansari were elected district chairman and secretary of the federation. The other office-bearers are D. Sujathan and S.K. Balakrishna Pillai, vice-chairmen, U. Shaji, joint secretary, R. Preetha, C.N. Padmakumar and P. Rajan, joint secretaries, and R. Anup, treasurer.
