Life term for Shahabuddin

Special Correspondent

"Only capital punishment would have done justice to my son"

PATNA: The Additional District and Sessions Judge of Siwan, on Tuesday, awarded life term to RJD MP Md. Shahabuddin in connection with the abduction and murder of CPI (ML) worker Chhote Lal Gupta eight years ago.

The court of Gyaneshwar Prasad Shrivastava also slapped a fine of Rs. 10,000 on Shahabuddin whom he pronounced guilty in the case on Saturday last. Shahabuddin was present in the court held inside the Siwan Jail premises. The prosecution produced seven witnesses, including prime eyewitness Sheetal Paswan, who was with Gupta when Shahabuddin picked him up in his vehicle from near a railway crossing on February 5, 1999.

There has been no trace of the victim all through the eight years of investigation.

Gupta's father Deenanath Sah said only capital punishment to Shahabuddin would have done justice to his son who was brutally killed.

Shahabuddin's lawyers said they would appeal against the ruling before an appellate court.
