BJP announces Ullal bypoll candidate

BANGALORE: The Parliamentary Board of the Bharatiya Janata Party has cleared the name of Chandrashekar Uchchil as its candidate for the June 2 byelection to the Legislative Assembly from Ullal constituency.

State BJP president D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who attended the Parliamentary Board meeting in Delhi on Tuesday, told The Hindu on the telephone, "We supported the candidate of our coalition partner, the Janata Dal (S), in the bypoll from Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency. We are expecting the JD(S) to extend similar cooperation to us in the Ullal bypoll," he said.

KDA chief pulls up Deputy Commissioner

Belgaum: Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman Siddalingaiah has pulled up Deputy Commissioner and in-charge Chief Executive Officer of the Belgaum Zilla Panchayat M.E. Shivalinga Murthy for issuing a press release in Marathi, provoking anger among Kannada-speaking people and creating an unnecessary controversy.

The press release in Marathi angered Kannada organisations, and the Belgaum District Kannada Organisations Action Committee complained to the KDA and demanded action against him.

Dr. Siddalingaiah asked the Deputy Commissioner to reply to his letter of May 4 within ten days. — Staff Correspondent

School watchman murdered

Bidar: The president of a school development and management committee allegedly killed the watchman of the schools at Mudhol B village in Aurad taluk on Sunday.

According to a complaint lodged by the watchman's nephew, Dashrath Madappa, his uncle, Hulleppa Dhangar, 65, usually slept in the school. He was awakened by voices on Sunday night and saw committee president Vishwanath Mailare and two others trying to steal foodgrains stored in the school for the midday meal scheme. He tried to stop them, but Mailare and the others smashed his head with a stone and fled, said the complaint.

A case has been registered, the police said. — Staff Correspondent

Two children drown

Kolar: Two children, including a girl, drowned at Vakkaleri village in Kolar taluk on Monday. They have been identified as Tanuja, 14, and Satish, 9. They reportedly slipped into a well while feeding fish. The Kolar Rural police are investigating. — Staff Correspondent

Loan provided for heart surgery

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Saturday presented a cheque for Rs. 50,000 to Shivanna of Chikkanayakanahalli in Tumkur district. The cheque was issued by the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Development Corporation. Shivanna, a Scheduled Caste person had undergone heart surgery for which he had run up debts.

While Rs. 10,000 is in the form of subsidy, Mr. Shivanna will have to repay the remainder at four per cent interest. — Staff Reporter

`Awareness of labour laws important'

Kolar: Awareness about labour laws will help the working class to protect itself from being exploited by owners and managements, district judge A.V. Chandrashekar has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a legal awareness and aid programme for workers here on Monday.

The District Legal Services Authority and the Bar Association organised the programme in association with various labour organisations. — Staff Correspondent

Two die of burns

HASSAN: Lakshme Gowda (54), a merchant, and his wife have succumbed to the burns suffered in a fire that broke out in a petty shop attached to their house in Sulugodu village in Alur Taluk on Sunday. The accident occurred when he was pouring kerosene into a bottle at the shop. Subbamma (50) who rushed to rescue her husband also sustained burns. Both of them died on Monday. The Alur police are investigating.
