Margao: Singapore Armed Forces held on to a first half lead to defeat Mahindra United 1-0 and virtually qualify for the next round of the Asian Football Confederation Cup tournament on Tuesday. Chaiman Therdsak scored the lone goal of the match off a free kick in the sixth minute. Mahindra, which dominated the entire second-half, was frustrated by the rival defence and goalkeeper, who held off Mahindra's challenge gamely to deny it a victory. Singapore Armed Forces, which tops Group `E' with 12 points from five matches, is virtually through to the next round with one match in hand, while Mahindra, with nine points from five matches, is second. The visitor, which had more of the ball possession initially, took the lead in the sixth minute through a free kick taken by Therdsak, who beat goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury to his left. Mahindra, which beat Singapore Armed Forces 2-0 in the away match, slowly found its rhythm as it controlled the latter part of the first-half, made moves mostly from the right, but the strikers were found wanting when opportunities came their way and the absence of Yusif Yakubu was felt.
Bagan loses
Meanwhile in Singapore, Mohun Bagan lost 2-0 to local champion Tampines Rovers, which entered the quarterfinals of the AFC Cup for the third consecutive year. Noh Alam Shah scored twice for the home team. The Singapore international striker opened the scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick late in the first half and slotted home his second midway through the second half as Tampines assured itself of the top spot in Group `F.'
