CPI(M) for probe into Dalit killings

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: The State unit of the CPI (M) has urged the Government to order an investigation into the Dalit killings in Kambalapalli and also retrial of the accused.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, S. Prasannakumar, member of the CPI(M) State Secretariat, said that all the accused had been acquitted mainly because of the failure of the prosecution in producing strong evidence.

He took exception to the "delay" on the part of the Government in keeping the promises made when the CPI(M) organised a "jatha" from Kambalpalli to Bangalore last month.

"On behalf of the Government, Katta Subramanyam Naidu accepted the memorandum and sought 15 days' time to meet our demand. But the State Government has not conceded to our demands for reinvestigation and retrial, and a package for the affected Dalit families," he said.

Mr. Prasannakumar said that the CPI(M) had written a letter to the Chief Minister, urging him to convene a meeting to discuss the issue.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has organised a meeting on May 13 in which members of pro-Dalit organisations and like-minded people will discuss the need for a probe and retrial of the accused.

Mr. Prasannakumar criticised the Government for not distributing the ration cards to people who are below the poverty line, and for introducing unit system for distributing foodgrains.

Referring to auction of government land recovered from land-grabbers, Mr. Prasannakumar said that the Government should allot it to the poor.
