VC's continuation in office opposed

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Pralhad Joshi, MP for Dharwad North, has taken exception to the continuation of K.V. Balaveera Reddy as Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, even after completing two terms in office.

In a release issued here, Mr. Joshi said he had already written to the Governor in this regard.

The MP said that Mr. Reddy was trying to get another term and that his continuation in office was against the interests of the education system and also the students.

There were legal hurdles in continuing a person above 65 years as vice-chancellor of a university and it was astonishing that Mr. Reddy was continuing to hold the post, Mr. Joshi said. The MP criticised the move of Mr. Reddy to constitute the academic council when he was only an "in-charge" vice-chancellor.

To avoid giving scope for controversy, it would be better if another person was appointed in-charge vice-chancellor, he said.
