PLEA: Members of the CPI staging a `rasta roko' in Gulbarga on Tuesday.
Gulbarga: Members of the Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a "rasta roko" here on Tuesday, demanding proper drinking water supply to the city. They blocked the Gulbarga-Sedam road for nearly two hours in the morning, and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. People of Gubbi Colony Arya Eediga Samaj Extension were suffering from acute water scarcity. The colonies were established 30 years ago, but there was no system for permanent drinking water supply. The Gulbarga Mahanagara Palike installed pipelines in these areas five years ago, but water was not supplied. This exposed the "apathy" of the Government, they said in a memorandum. There were some borewells in the areas but they did not yield potable water. People who drank it were falling prey to diseases, the protesters alleged. They demanded that the district administration issue land rights to the people in these colonies, provide water from the Bheema and also basic amenities.
