VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Government will take a decision on the number of vents to be fixed to Pulichintala project only after the Central Water Commission (CWC) submits its final report, Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said on Tuesday. At a press conference here, the Minister said that Telugu Desam Party leaders were trying to politicise the issue. The State Government was expecting the CWC to submit its final report by May 20. The project had been delayed because of the court cases against it and the procedures of the Disputes Adjudication Board (DAB), but the contractors had been asked to speed up work so that it could be completed by June 2009, he said. Mr. Lakshmaiah hit out at TDP leader T. Devender Goud for terming the administrative sanction given to Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar Tailpond project a "deathblow" to Telangana region. Mr. Lakshmaiah said work had commenced on 13 of the 23 packages of Polavaram project. Tenders had been finalised for 27 of the 30 packages for the strengthening of flood banks for rivers and other watercourses in Krishna, Guntur, East Godavari and West Godavari districts. The Congress Government had demonstrated its commitment to irrigation projects by making a department that was earlier unable to handle works of a value of Rs. 1,000 crores to complete works costing Rs. 13,000 crores. The number of clearances that it got for the execution of irrigation projects was unprecedented, he added.
