HYDERABAD: The Opposition Telugu Desam, the CPI, the CPI (M) and other parties have urged the Andhra Pradesh Government to resolve the ongoing stalemate with the APSRTC employees' unions and avert the proposed strike from the midnight of May 11. A section of employees of the RTC announced their intentions to launch an indefinite strike if the management did not concede their demands. The 41-charter of demands included regularisation of services of contract employees, steps to prevent operation of private stage carriers and put an end to closure of depots. Participating in a round table meeting organised by the APSRTC employees' unions, TDP senior leader E. Peddi Reddy, CPI State secretary K. Narayana, CPI (M) State secretariat member Y.V. Rao and BJP representative Subash Chanderji criticised the Congress Government for not fulfilling the promises it made before the elections for improving the health of the corporation. The Government had instead adopted delaying tactics and avoided solution to the demands put forth by the employees.
Demands
Expressing their solidarity with the agitating employees, the political parties resolved to meet Transport Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana shortly to represent the employees' issues and request him to avert the strike. Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Peddi Reddy demanded that the State Government convene a meeting of the political parties and employees' unions to thrash out a solution to the problems faced by the RTC staff. The Government was trying to weaken the corporation by measures like non-replacement of buses and putting a halt to recruitment of staff.
