Union members stage protest in front of SSA office

  • Allege material purchased by SSA for schools is inferior
  • Most of the officials accept bribes for suppliers, they say

ANANTAPUR: The Joint Action Committee of Teachers' Organisations (JACTO) on Tuesday laid siege to the office of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) here demanding a CID inquiry into the alleged large-scale irregularities in the project.

Members of State Teachers' Unions, United Teachers' Federation, Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation, AP Teachers' Federation (H) and Panchayat Raj Teachers' Union took out a procession to the SSA office and staged protest there.

The JACTO leaders also demanded suspension of the Additional Project Coordinator of SSA.

The union leaders alleged that most of the officials involved in the project were corrupt and had accepted bribes from suppliers of materials.

    Protests ignored

Both officials and non-officials were equally responsible for the irregularities and corruption in the project, they said.

The quality of metal cupboards supplied to schools by the SSA recently was inferior, they alleged.

Even the protests of teachers were overlooked in this matter. The SSA officials had even threatened the mandal education officers who had refused to give indents for supply of material with previous dates.

Those who had agreed for the `proposal' were given commission in the form of percentages.

The SSA officials had purchased books worth Rs. 2 crores without even assessing the requirement.

Neither MEOs nor the teachers were consulted while buying the books, they alleged.
