GUWAHATI: The Assam Network of Positive People (ANP+) has approached the SOS Children's village at Mirzapur to admit 13 AIDS orphans of the State to the village.

Jahnabi Goswami, the first woman in northeast to declare her HIV status, who heads the ANP+ told The Hindu that the SOS Children's village authorities had expressed their keenness to admit these orphans.

She said her organisation would soon place a formal request to the authorities after taking into consideration various aspects of special care needed for adopting these orphans.

The orphans are in the age group 3 to 10 years, Ms. Goswami added.

International AIDS orphans day was also observed in the State. Earlier, Ms. Goswami told reporters that 29 organisations, including the People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), trade union, civil society groups, media personnel, NGOs of Assam formed an alliance called the Assam People's Alliance to combat HIV and AIDS.

The alliance would strive to achieve the objectives of ensuring universal access to care and treatment for PLWHA in the State

Ms. Goswami said that the alliance would observe the ensuing Global AIDS Week of Action, the international campaign on universal access to treatment for PLWHA to be observed in the State from May 20 to May 26 to bring about a greater sense of responsibility and accountability from all stakeholders towards people living with HIV and AIDS.
