`THIRD EYE': P.Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, looking at the equipment in Madurai on Tuesday. Photo: K. Ganesan
Shastry V. Mallady and T. Saravanan MADURAI: Activities in the Madurai Kamaraj University here will come under technology-aided surveillance soon, as a `third eye' is to be installed at various vantage points on the campus. As a result, entry of unauthorised outsiders will be effectively checked. The university is in the process of acquiring a camera-fitted remote monitoring system designed with specific software that suits surveillance. Representatives from a Chennai-based private company held a special demonstration on Tuesday to showcase the salient features of the system. "We should have a monitoring mechanism to keep track of employees' work, entry and exit of trespassers, etc. It will be of great help for good administration," says P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor. As per the proposal, the surveillance system has a rotating high power camera that gives live visual images with which any abnormality can be quickly dealt with. For the better understanding of university authorities, the company staff showed how persons sitting in Madurai can watch the live action of employees working at a 16th floor office in Hong Kong. Such a system can be of more use in monitoring day-to-day affairs including admissions, examinations and paper valuation, besides the functioning of Directorate of Distance Education. Senior officials who witnessed the demonstration welcomed installation of a surveillance unit as it serves as a `third eye' for better control. At the end of the demonstration, the Vice-Chancellor said, "One can notice that the staff in Hong Kong office did not even move or chat a bit at workplace. May be we should take a leaf from their book."
