MYSORE: The Devaraja police have recovered counterfeit notes worth Rs. 1.63 lakh that were allegedly credited to the branch of Karur Vysya Bank on D. Devaraj Urs Road here.

Inspector N.H. Ramachandraiah told The Hindu here on Tuesday that the fake notes were allegedly credited to the bank by Sonakshi Jewellers, which is located in the same building.

The fake notes were noticed only after Karur Vysya Bank credited the amount to ICICI Bank on Kalidasa Road here. "Seventy 500-rupee notes and 181 1,000-rupee notes were found inserted in a bundle of Rs. 3 lakh," he said. When the matter came to light, the authorities of Karur Vysya Bank filed a complaint with the Devaraja police, who registered a case and have taken up an investigation in the matter.

Mr. Ramachandraiah said that the proprietors of the jewellery shop would be questioned in order to ascertain the origin of the fake notes.

In the last two months, the Mysore police seized fake notes in Rs. 100, 500 and 1,000 denominations in three separate incidents. A police official admitted to The Hindu that the circulation of fake notes in the city had risen in recent months. A police team busted a racket involving the printing of fake notes at Bylakuppe village in Periyapatna taluk recently.
