Bill to set up welfare board for disabled

CHENNAI: Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna on Tuesday introduced in the Assembly a Bill to set up a welfare board for disabled persons for implementing and administering various welfare measures.The Minister will be the board chairman, the Social Welfare Secretary, vice-chairman, and the State Commissioner for the Disabled, member-secretary.

The board will strive to provide medical services for the disabled; financial assistance to non-governmental organisations and associations that take care of mentally retarded persons; barrier-free environment in public places, work places, schools, colleges and other institutions; amenities for setting up special schools in the private sector for those in need of special education in such a manner that children with disabilities have access to such schools; help in the training of disabled persons by NGOs and associations and provide subsidy to needy employers who employ disabled persons.
