Two arrested with 33 kg. heroin

Drug worth 33 crore in international market

NEW DELHI: A consignment of 33 kg fine quality heroin valued at Rs. 33 crore in the international market has been seized from a jeep by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence at Trilokpuri here. Two persons have been arrested.

Acting on a tip-off that a consignment of heroin would be smuggled into Delhi from Amritsar in a jeep, the DRI sleuths laid a trap and intercepted the vehicle at Trilokpuri on Monday evening. The heroin stuffed in several packets was found concealed in a spare tyre, between the seats and floor of the jeep. Subsequently two persons travelling in the jeep were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPC) Act. They were identified as Gurdev Singh and Mandeep Singh, both residents of Amritsar in Punjab.

During interrogation, they purportedly disclosed that they had brought the consignment to the Capital to deliver it to one of their clients at Vikaspuri here. The DRI officials suspect that the accused, whose villages are located near the Indo-Pakistan border, procured the heroin from those smuggling it in from across the border. Generally such consignments are smuggled into the country from Afghanistan via Pakistan, Jammu and Punjab.

The DRI also claims to have arrested a Nigerian with 15 kg of heroin at Mohali near Chandigarh this past week.
