DREAM SHATTERED: Landless poor leave their temporary dwellings at Jawaharnagar, in Shamirpet mandal after they are evicted. Photo: Mohd. Yousuf
HYDERABAD: The Government on Tuesday removed over 1,000 huts illegally erected by poor people at Jawaharnagar village panchayat in Alwal police station area. Mild tension prevailed when police cane-charged the hut dwellers who initially resisted the demolition drive but gave up eventually. The huts were recently put up by migrant daily-wage earners, under the aegis of the CPI (M) at Jawaharnagar village. The huts, erected on 250 acres of open lands, under survey no. 706, were allotted to the HUDA. Assisted by a strong police contingent, the HUDA officials descended on the village around 7 a.m. with demolition squads. They removed all the huts and cleared the alleged encroachments. Preventive custody
Some 50 men and women, who resisted the attempts, were taken into preventive custody and sent to Petbasheerabad police station. Ibrahimpatnam MLA M. Narsimha of the CPI(M) condemned the police lathicharge. He alleged that Alwal ACP K. Laxma Reddy abused him when he requested the latter to release the elderly persons and women. The MLA staged a demonstration on the police station premises for some time in protest against the removal of the huts and the alleged rude behaviour of the police.
