MANGALORE: There is a mismatch in skill sets provided by educational institutions and those required by various industries. This supply-demand mismatch needs to be addressed, according to Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao.

He was speaking at an interactive meet on the "promotion of technical skills in Dakshina Kannada district" organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Even as Mangalore was witnessing tremendous growth with the setting up of an international airport and the coming of a Special Economic Zone, there was a need to rethink the stagnation in the manufacturing sector, he said. Several small industries in Baikampady Industrial area had closed down, he said.

Mr. Rao suggested that the Kanara Chamber of Commerce could conduct a sample market survey of industries that can identify skill sets that are in shortage in various sectors. Findings of such a survey would help the Industrial Training Institutions (ITI's) upgrade their courses and help the administration in future programmes, he said.

Referring to the functioning of ITI's, he said a matrix of problems faced by these institutions in the district and potential solutions could be drawn up, to improve their functioning.

S.G. Hegde, joint director, District Industries Centre, spoke of the need to create a data bank of skilled persons available in the district, and the various skill sets required by different industries. By properly matching the data, jobs can be made available to several persons, he said.

The Kanara Chamber of Commerce submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner suggesting changes that could be incorporated in the Industrial Training Institutions in the district. The suggestions included setting up of a nodal agency to coordinate between the training centres and the industry, imparting special programs on topics such as Total Quality Management (TQM) and safety, and starting new courses with strong industry linkages in sectors such as tourism and health care. KCCI has also urged the Deputy Commissioner to take measures to improve the infrastructure of the ITI's, providing the institutions with quality staff with suitable remuneration, and revising the syllabus to meet market needs.
