ISLAMABAD: India and Pakistan are discussing a package of proposals on Siachen that could lead to the establishment of a "zone of peace" on the glacier, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry has said. To a question at the weekly briefing on Monday, spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said "a number of proposals" were being discussed for a package that included "the possibility of indicating current [troops] positions" as well as where they should be relocated. "As part of this package, a zone of peace can be established," Ms. Aslam said. An agreement on the issue would be an important step for confidence-building and dispute resolution. It would also help avert an environmental catastrophe as studies had shown that the glacier was rapidly melting. An agreement would enable the two countries to make joint efforts to save it, she said.
