BANGALORE: Former Irrigation Secretary G. Ashwathnarayana, who had studied the storm water drains in the city and recommended their remodelling in 2000, has expressed displeasure over the slow progress of the project. "The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) should have completed the project in two years. It is unfortunate that even after seven years the project is still in its infancy. I studied the problem and suggested that the system be remodelled based on the directions of the Karnataka High Court in 1999. Now I plan to bring this to the notice of the Government," Mr. Ashwathnarayana said on Tuesday. He told presspersons on the sidelines of a discussion on "Improving Storm Water Drainage System in Bangalore" that if the recommendations had been implemented, the flooding of low-lying areas and the loss of life and property during previous monsoons could have been prevented. Earlier, Mr. Ashwathnarayana suggested that the State Government enact a legislation that would enable the civic body to clear all the encroachments over and along the storm water drains in the city.
