50 per cent of work on airport project completed

Authorities racing to meet the April 2008 deadline


  • Fabrication for eight aero-bridges linking the terminal completed
  • Fixing of lights along the runway has commenced


    BANGALORE: Racing to meet the April 2008 deadline for the formal commissioning of the international airport at Devanahalli, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has completed over 50 per cent of the work on the project.

    A major milestone was achieved last week with 95 per cent of the roofing completed. According to a status report from the BIAL, 58 per cent of waterproofing and thermal insulation has been completed.

    The fabrication for eight aero-bridges linking to the terminal building is now completed. Pavement layering in the car park area, installation of structural supports for the baggage handling system in the departure area, and installation of the structural supports for the escalators have commenced.

    After the completion of the runway paving, fixing of the lights along the runway has now commenced.

    On the taxiway, 70 per cent of the laying of the bottom asphalt layer has been completed, including the two rapid exits where these works have been completed already.

    In the apron area, laying of the concrete layer has been completed on 1,30,000 sq mt of the 3,60,000 sq mt and laying of the concrete layer in the isolation bay has commenced.

    Work on the fabrication of the top dome of the ATC tower has currently reached a height of 60 metres.

    The sewage and water pipelines, and the electrical cable trays have been laid for the full height of 60 metres.

    The total height of the tower including the top cabin will be 65 metres when completed.

    Manufacturing and procurement of the building management system equipment is nearing completion.
