A documentary on farmers

A group of students wanted to find out why so many farmers commit suicide in Wayanad. Over the last five years, more than 1,500 farmers are estimated to have ended their lives because of financial distress.

The students from Auriga Multimedia, Thalassery, visited the hilly district, met many farmers and shot a documentary, titled `Chithayile Chirakadikal.'

``The situation continues to be bad,'' says Shamseer Punnassery, who directed the 20-minute documentary. ``We were told that little had been done to improve the lot of farmers. The Government gives financial assistance to the relatives of the dead farmers, but that, according to the people we met, only encouraged more farmers to commit suicide.'' He says he decided to make a film only because he wanted to show to the world a serious problem the State is facing today.
