Prime Minister Manmohan Singh files his nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat, in Guwahati on Wednesday.
Guwahati: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said that he was committed to a "balanced, equitable and sustainable development of Assam." Dr. Singh was speaking to reporters here after filing his nomination papers seeking re-election to the Rajya Sabha from the State for the fourth consecutive term. Earlier addressing a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party, the Prime Minister recalled his 15-year long association with the people of Assam and pledged lifelong association with the State.Dr. Singh submitted four sets of nomination papers with a total of 40 legislators from the ruling Congress and its coalition partner Bodoland People's Progressive Front (BPPF-Hagrma). Dr. Singh was accompanied by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, AICC treasurer Motilal Vora, AICC general secretary in charge of Assam Digvijay Singh, Union Minister for Heavy Industries Santosh Mohan Dev at the time of filing nomination papers before the Secretary, Assam Assembly, D.N. Das. Later briefing reporters on the CLP meeting, Education Minister Ripun Bora said that the ruling Congress-BPPF coalition decided not to field a second candidate in honour of Dr. Singh as the coalition partners wanted the Prime Minister to be re-elected to the Rajya Sabha uncontested. Earlier, Dr. Singh went to his rented flat at Sarumotoria near Dispur secretariat and spent some time there. He met Debabrat Saikia, son of the landlady Dr. Hemoprova Saikia, former minister and wife of late Hiteswar Saikia, former Chief Minister.
