NEW DELHI: An all-party meeting of leaders has been convened by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on May 15. This follows his assurance given at a similar meeting on the eve of the post-recess Budget session that he would call a meeting of party leaders to discuss issues arising from the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gujarat Babubhai Katara in a human trafficking case. At that meeting the BJP had insisted that a uniform policy should be adopted for dealing with wrong-doing by MPs, including MPs charge sheeted in criminal cases.
It is different: MPs
A number of leaders at that meeting felt that the Katara case was different from the cash-for-questions scandal in that the police had already arrested the concerned MP, investigations were on, and the alleged wrong-doing did not involve Mr. Katara's functions as an MP. A view was also expressed in favour of disqualifying Mr. Katara as was done in the case of MPs involved in the cash-for-questions scandal. Notices for the May 15 meeting were being sent out on Wednesday and it is learnt that there has been no mention of the issue to be discussed.
