`Give priority to development works'

NAMAKKAL: Collector G. Sundaramurthi asked the officials to give priority for road improvement, creation of drinking water facilities and installation of streetlights in rural areas.

Participating in a mass contact programme held at Paramathi Velur near here on Wednesday, the Collector said that the officials should not cause unnecessary delay in the execution of development works and redressing the grievances of people. The petitions received during the programme would be processed immediately, he said. He said that the district administration was selecting the beneficiaries in a transparent manner under free colour television and free liquefied petroleum gas connection and stove schemes, he said.

The administration received 45,000 applications seeking new family cards. Of them, 43,000 had been verified. Officials had issued new family cards to 12,000 applicants so far and more cards were being printed in Chennai, he said. He distributed welfare assistance to beneficiaries selected under various schemes.

Earlier, the Collector inspected the progress of the development works being carried out under Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam in Mallasamudram block.

The district administration was implementing various works, including formation of new roads, construction of sheds and compound walls in burial grounds, laying of drinking water pipelines and creation of ponds. These works were being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 1 crore. He told the contractors to complete the works within the scheduled time.

District Rural Development Agency Project officer P. Renuga Devi and senior officials were present.
