CHENNAI : A notorious gang allegedly involved in the attack on an employee of Integral Coach Factory here recently was nabbed on Tuesday. Two persons were arrested and a country-made gun, a few live cartridges, a knife and a two-wheeler were seized.

The arrests and seizure followed the surrender of Kumaran, another accused in the case, before a court recently. A hunt is on for Anil, another accused.

Talking to presspersons, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran said that on April 14, an armed gang attacked a 34-year-old man identified as Ahmad Basha, an employee of the ICF near the ICF Housing Colony. It escaped after opening fire at him.

The victim was admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. The ICF police registered a case of attempt to murder and another under the Indian Arms Act.

A special team, led by Additional Commissioner of Police S.R. Jangid and comprising DCP (Central Crime Branch) K. Dharmarajan and ACP C. Jayakumar, was formed. Following investigations, the team found that Basha and one Kumaran of Ambattur were friends.

Their friendship soured when Kumaran found Basha having an affair with his wife. Annoyed over the relationship, Kumaran planned to eliminate Basha. For this, he got in touch with his relative Rengasamy, who is serving a life term in Madurai Central Prison in connection with a murder case, the Commissioner said.

Rengasamy introduced Kumaran to another life convict "Peruvilai" Mohan and they allegedly conspired to execute Basha through their accomplice Krishnamurthi alias Madhan of Nagercoil. For this, Mohan demanded Rs. 5 lakh. Krishnamurthi came to Chennai in February accompanied by his friend Edwin and devised a plan at Kumaran's workshop in Ambattur.

After receiving Rs. 60,000 from Kumaran, the two purchased a gun from Anil of Madhya Pradesh. Though the gang planned to kill Basha in a manner that would be construed as an accidental death, the plan could not be executed.

On April 14, when Basha was returning home by cycle from a gym, Krishnamurthi and Anil, who came on a two-wheeler, blocked his way and allegedly opened fire at him. As a crowd gathered, the two fled from the scene.

Fearing arrest, Kumaran surrendered before the court in Kallakurichi. The special team took him into custody and based on his confession, arrested Madhan and Edwin on Tuesday at Koyambedu. A hunt is on to nab Anil, Ms. Saran said.
