NEW DELHI: The Congress and the Left parties on Wednesday said the Election Commission should take further action against the Bharatiya Janata Party if it failed to comply with its directive to publicly condemn the contents of the compact disc issued by the party during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
"Stringent punishment"
In case the BJP did not follow the directive, the Commission should award "stringent punishment" to the party, which had clearly violated "not just democratic norms, but [was also] seeking to destroy harmony in society and its secular fabric," Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said here. The Congress said the Commission could not have been "more lenient" as the punishment did not match the enormity and gravity of the offence. There should have been further probe into the first information reports, and a refusal by the BJP should lead to a CBI inquiry.
CPI (M) demand
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) said the BJP leadership should issue an unqualified condemnation of the contents of the CD. "In case it fails to do so, the Election Commission should take further action, so that the use of communal propaganda and hate campaign during the elections is put an end to," a Polit Bureau statement said. The party, in its representation to the Commission, had said it was not enough for the BJP to dissociate itself from the CD and it should publicly apologise and condemn its contents.
