Lottery ticket sale continues unchecked

CHENNAI: The volume of lottery tickets coming into the State is huge and remains unchecked, though the sale was banned in January 2003 under the Lotteries Regulation Act, the police say.

Raids conducted in different parts of the State on Monday by 59 teams of the CB-CID confirmed this fact.

Reliable sources have told The Hindu that the lottery tickets come into the State from Kolkata through different modes of transport.

A well-known organisation has been purchasing the tickets from Sikkim, Bhutan, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh and selling them through agents/traders in Chennai and other towns.

Police blamed

The sources say the police have not been keeping a tab on the sale in areas under their jurisdiction.

As a result, the traders are selling them at exorbitant rates — ranging from Rs. 20 to Rs. 100 apiece — though the face value is Re. 1. The results are published in some local dailies and broadcast on a television channel.

In Chennai Gold Rasi, Super Nallaneram, Sree Ganapathy, Kuil Super and Sree Ganapathy tickets are sold at K.K. Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur, East Coast Road, Ambattur, Pudupet, Ayanavaram, Teynampet and other prominent localities.
