India defeats Singapore

NEW DELHI: India beat Singapore 2-1 in a pool `D' league match of the Asia-Oceania junior Fed Cup under-16 girls' tennis tournament at the National Tennis Centre, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday. The second win in the four-member league ensured India would qualify for the quarterfinals, along with the second-seeded Japan.

A victory over Japan would help India face one of the second placed teams in the quarterfinals, which would enhance its chances of qualification for the World Group.

The results: Pool `A': Australia bt Philippines 2-0; Korea bt Pacific Oceania 2-0. Pool `B': Thailand bt Malaysia 3-0; Indonesia bt Chinese Taipei 2-1. Pool `C': Uzbekistan bt Hong Kong 2-1; China bt New Zealand 2-0. Pool `D': Japan bt Sri Lanka 3-0; India bt Singapore 2-1 (Kyra Shroff bt Li Yun Stefanie Tan 6-2, 6-1; Tanvi Shah lost to Celina Cassandra Goetti 2-6, 4-6; Kyra Shroff and V. Archana bt Celina Cassandra Goetti and Li Yun Stefanie Tan 6-1, 7-6(5)).
