Punjab pips Rajasthan

NAWANSHAHR: Host Punjab pipped Rajasthan 40-39 to emerge the leader in Group `A' of the boys' section in the 39th National sub-junior basketball championship at the Kirpal Sagar Academy, Rahon.

With three teams scheduled to qualify for the quarterfinals from the group, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh were following Punjab in the race, ahead of Mizoram.

In Group `B', Chhattisgarh defeated Delhi 55-18 to take the lead, leaving Madhya Pradesh and Manipur to fight for one of the three qualifiers' slot from the group for the knock-out stage. Madhya Pradesh beat Manipur 47-38 to enhance its chances.

UP girls humble Punjab

In the girls' section, Uttar Pradesh humbled Punjab 42-14 in Group `A', while Chhattisgarh proved too good for Karnataka with a 65-20 victory in the same group.

Haryana beat Tamil Nadu 51-35 in Group `B' and Kerala defeated Manipur 39-9 in Group `C'.Six of the eight teams will qualify for the quarterfinals from the first two groups.— Special Correspondent
