Salwan Boys HS wins title

  • Anshul Gupta adjudged man of the match
  • Salwan School's sixth title in seven editions

NEW DELHI: Anshul Gupta hit a match-winning 83 (100b, 10x4) as Salwan Boys High School (Delhi) defeated Spring Field Rizvi High School (Mumbai) by 70 runs to win the Parle Champions Trophy under-17 inter-school cricket tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground here on Wednesday.

Five-time champion Salwan School was at its best despite being restricted to a modest total. Its decision to bat after winning the toss seemed to backfire as runs came at a premium, but for Gupta's 83. Neeraj Kumar hit 36 with four boundaries to help Salwan cross the 200-run mark.

Chasing a target of 206 runs, the defending champion Rizvi School lost the grip early on. Left-arm spinner Darshan Kajania took three for 13, while Sandeep Kaushik (two for 21) and Neeraj Kumar (two for 22) also joined the party.

Anshul, who helped Salwan School win its sixth title in seven editions after missing out last year in Chennai, was adjudged the Man of the Match and also the Man of the Series. He scored two centuries in four matches and a total of 327 runs.

All other awards were also cornered by the Salwan School players with Kajania taking the best bowler award, Sandeep Kaushik (best batsman) and Salim Ansari (best wicketkeeper).

The scores: Salwan Boys High School (Delhi) 205 for seven in 45 overs (Anshul Gupta 83, Neeraj Kumar 36) bt Spring Field Rizvi High School (Mumbai) 135 in 37.4 overs (S. Mishra 27, Nitin Sonkar 25, Darshan Kajania three for 13).
