Tuticorin: Punjab posted a narrow 75-71 victory over Vijaya Bank, Bangalore in a closely-fought match, in the four-team super-league in the Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Trophy all-India basketball tournamentere on Wednesday. This was the second successive win for Punjab, while this was the second successive defeat for Vijaya Bank, in as many matches. Vijaya Bank lost to Indian Army narrowly 62-63 on Tuesday night also in a match, which it should have won. The last two free throws awarded to it had been wasted with hardly three seconds to go. However, Vijaya Bank lost the race for the honours. In the women's super-league, Western Railway, Mumbai beat KSEB, Thiruvananthapuram 68-62. This was the second win for Western Railway, whereas this was the second defeat for KSEB in as many matches. KSEB lost to Southern Railway on Tuesday night. As such KSEB lost the race for honours. The results: Men: Punjab 75 (Ishra 23, Preetinder Singh 20) bt Vijaya Bank 71 (Basavaraj 21, Austin 22). Women: Western Railway 68 (Lincy Joseph 29, Ivy Jackson 19) bt KSEB, Thiruvananthapuram 62 (Lajitha 18). Tuesday's results: Men: Indian Army 63 (Satpal 13, Subbiah 14) bt Vijaya Bank 62 (Asraf 18, Basavaraj 12). Women: Southern Railway 57 (Adhirai 16, Kokila 13) bt KSEB Thiruvananthapuram 47 (Arjana 11, Sonia Joseph 10).
Easy for SAI, Chennai
SAI, Chennai posted an emphatic 4-1 victory over Nilgiris XI, Ooty to enter the quarterfinals on the 42nd annual Abul Kalam Azad Memorial Trophy all-India football tournament at USC ground, Kayalpatnam on Wednesday. Divakar (7th minute), Vimalrajan (15th), Siva (19th) and Pradeep (47th) scored for SAI. Kumar (34th) scored for Nilgiris XI.
ICF advances
Defending champion, Integral Coach Factory, Chennai entered the semifinals of the 24th Champion Club football tournament for Universal Trophy with a 6-2 victory over Combined Vehicle Research Development and Establishment (CVR DE), Avadi at elangudi near Karaikudi on Wednesday. ICF, which dominated the proceedings throughout, led 5-0 at the interval. In the second session, the team played only a relaxed game to score one more goal. But CVR DE scored two goals. Johny (12th), Ashok Kumar (29th), Jegan-Jr (32nd, 73rd) and Venkatesh (34th, 36th) scored for ICF. Sudhakar (53rd), Krishna (89th) scored for CVR DE.
