Court gets firm with Vikas Yadav

Staff Reporter

Statement to be concluded on May 14

NEW DELHI: With Nitish Katara murder accused Vikas Yadav again complaining of ill health here on Wednesday, the court trying the case firmly told him that the recording of his statement would be completed this coming Monday.

Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur told Vikas, son of former Member of Parliament D. P. Yadav, that his statement and that of his cousin and co-accused Vishal Yadav would be completed on May 14, the next date of hearing. While Vishal's statement has been recorded on some of the main questions, his statement on a few supplementary questions remains incomplete.

Earlier, as the hearing on Wednesday began, Vikas answered 10 questions that were formal in nature. He then complained of a headache and other problems before seeking an adjournment.

Public Prosecutor J. S. Joon opposed this saying the accused was only delaying the trial by seeking adjournments regularly. At this, Vikas shot back saying if he wanted him dead.

As Vikas complained of ill health, the prosecution pressed for recording of Vishal's statement. However, his counsel said the recording would take place only after Vikas' statement was completed.

Meanwhile, Nitish's mother Neelam Katara also moved an application in the court challenging the statement of the accused that the doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital were under the influence of Ms. Katara and that their findings pertaining to Vikas' health were manipulated. In her application, Ms. Katara has questioned the basis on which the accused was making such a statement.

This past Monday the court had directed the police to take Vikas to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences for a medical check-up on Tuesday. The AIIMS report indicated that Vikas was fit enough to record his statement, though a few tests were prescribed.
