J&K takes steps towards e-governance

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has begun an ambitious journey towards e-governance with the re-opening of its offices here in the State's summer capital for the next six months. Besides the General Administration Department taking the lead in introducing a computer network and website, the Finance Department has started with a cashless treasury and is all set to digitise its records by September.

The General Administration Department, considered the nerve centre of Government functioning, wore a completely new look on Monday when Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugurated the office and also launched the website of the department which will not only give updated information but also serve as a gateway to many things. For the employees, it is the beginning of a new high-tech era in the Civil Secretariat that continues to function with the conventional set-up in other departments.

"We have just set an example and I am hopeful that others will follow it," says Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Commissioner/Secretary of the General Administration Department. According to him, from everyday Government orders to circulars, all the important forms will be available on the website which will be updated everyday.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Finance, Law and Planning, Tariq Hamid Qarra, inaugurated the first cashless treasury at the Secretariat. According to him, all the 103 treasuries in the State will be brought under this network by July 1.

"This will make the work in treasuries transparent and remove delays", he said, adding that e-transfer facility would be the most significant part of this system.
