Staff Correspondent

It aims to bridge the gap between academics and job market

  • It offers a three-month course
  • School will assist in job placements

HUBLI: "Vidya Poshak", a registered non-governmental organisation, which has been helping poor meritorious students with scholarships, has set up a Graduate Finishing School as a pilot project in Dharwad.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, R.N. Tikot, founder member of the organisation, and G. Anand Rao, director of the school, outlined the objectives behind setting up the school, which they said was exclusively for poor meritorious students.

The finishing school, a concept fast catching on, aimed at empowering students by bridging the gap between the academia and the job market, Mr. Tikot said.

The programme was primarily for students who were from economically weak backgrounds and had a bachelor's degree (or were in the final year) studying in a medium of instruction other than English.

The school would assist in getting them jobs, he added. Vidya Poshak would arrange for financial assistance for the training programme by giving collateral security for bank loans. Students would be required to repay the amount once they were placed, he said.

Mr. Tikot said the finishing school would offer a three-month course for a batch of 25 students. During the academic year, three batches would be trained. The organisation planned to set up similar schools in Belgaum, Bagalkot, Raichur and Gulbarga, he added.

MR. Anand Rao said the first screening test would be held in Sirsi, Dharwad and Belgaum on June 3 and training course would commence on June 18. The training programme included basic computer training, English language improvement programme and a life skill workshops, he explained.

Mr. Tikot said application forms were available at the office of the Vidya Poshak, opposite "Bala Balaga", Mahishi Road, Malamaddi, Dharwad (Ph: 0836-2747356). The forms can be downloaded from www.vidyaposhak.org. The organisation would also arrange to send the forms free of cost.
