DHARWAD: The members of 110 families residing in Antappanavar Oni in Ward Number six under the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, fearing the threat of eviction staged a demonstration here on Wednesday.

The protesters, who have been residing in the area for more than three decades, are faced with eviction as the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee, Dharwad, is claiming ownership of the land.

According to the protesters, the land belonged to Aminabi Mohammed Ismail and she had given it to them as she had no kin. They said had been residing in the area since 1974 and had been paying tax to the corporation, which had provided them electricity connections and water supply.

Isabella Das of "Sadhana", a non-governmental organisation working to ensure amenities for the poor, told The Hindu that the issue of ownership of the land was yet to be decided by the court. However, she said some APMC members had "warned" the residents recently that they would be evicted from the area.

She said that according the record of rights till July 19, 2006 the land (city survey no. 17B, one acre and 30 guntas) was in the name of Aminabi Ismail. However, according to the copy of record of rights taken on July 22, 2006, the ownership had been transferred to APMC, Dharwad, which had given rise to suspicion, she said. Later, the protesters handed over a memorandum addressed to the Deputy Commissioner to a senior officer of the district administration .
