HASSAN: The Hassan Town police have registered a case against Kumar Malpe, owner of S.R.K. Jewellers, under Sections 420 and 406 of the Indian Penal Code for cheating customers out of Rs. 25 lakh. Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane said here on Wednesday that Mr. Malpe had been running the jewellery shop near Panduranga temple in Hassan for 15 years. He disappeared from Hassan a week ago after vacating his house. Most of his customers were working women who had made advance payments for gold ornaments. When the shop did not open even after a week, people started suspecting that something was wrong. Basavaraj from Hemavathi Nagar and Dayanand from Chennaraypatna have lodged a complaint. The police opened the shop and seized some records.
