UNDER WAY: Work on a culvert in progress on the Sandur bypass in Bellary district.
BELLARY: People of Sandur town heaved a sigh of relief, with work beginning on the Sandur bypass. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will formally flag off the project during his visit to Sandur on Thursday. Being the hub of mining activity in the district, hundreds of lorries carrying iron ore pass through the town every day causing large-scale air pollution, spoiling the environment and affecting the health of the people. Residents resorted to agitation on several occasions to draw the attention of authorities to the need for a bypass. The Bellary Agenda Task Force took the initiative. Authorities had banned the movement of lorries carrying ore during the day. As per the plan, the 16.23-km bypass will stretch from Kumaraswamy temple road to Dharmapur via NMDC Cross on the outskirts of Sandur, linking Hospet Road and another linking Kudligi Road, at an estimated cost of Rs. 18.5 crore. Construction of culvert and drains, mud filling and levelling is under way on 153 acres already acquired for the purpose.
