TIRUPUR: The three-day 24th India Knit Fair (spring/summer collection 2008) began on Wednesday at the India Knit Fair Association complex here. Inaugurating the national event, Coimbatore Collector Neeraj Mittal said it was really a good initiative. Besides knitwear manufacturers of Tirupur, garment exporters from Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Chennai and Noida are also participating in the buyer-seller meet.
Manufacturers
Mr. Mittal said the number of visiting buyers has been increasing. Tirupur has become a national meeting place of knitwear manufacturers and buyers. As many as 50 buyers have been displaying their range of collections at the exhibition. On the year-on-year growth of 25 per cent in knitwear exports from Tirupur, Mr. Mittal said it was a great achievement. Value addition and diversifying the product range including technical textiles were necessary to keep pace with the growth. He suggested that the Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) focus on research on this. Tirupur industry is generating a number of jobs. On sponsoring candidates to the Apparel Training and Design Centre, here, through the district administration, Mr. Mittal said the programme was successful. So far the district administration under Mahalir Thittam has sponsored 140 women candidates. Most of them were interested in starting their own ventures in a small way.
MBA programme
TEA president A. Sakthivel hoped that a large number of buyers and buying houses would visit the fair. He said that an MBA (international business) programme would be started at TEA Public School from September. TEA Business School would start functioning at the IKFA complex initially. The intake for the course would be 30. The syllabus would be designed to cater to the knitwear industry's needs. In the evening, Sameer Vyas, director of Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company Limited, declared open the air-conditioned convention centre. A. Krishna Kumar, chief general manager of State Bank of India, Mid Corporate Group, presided.
