THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The doctors in all Government Medical Colleges across the State will strike work on May 14, Monday, in protest against the suspension of K. Rajmohan, the former Superintendent of SAT Hospital, from Medical College service. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association has protested against the manner in which Dr. Rajmohan was made a scapegoat in the incident at SAT Hospital, while successive Governments have done nothing to improve the basic facilities or acute staff shortage in medical colleges. The infection outbreak, which claimed the lives of 38 newborns at SAT Hospital, was a consequence of this neglect by the Government and Dr. Rajmohan could not be held responsible for the incident, the KGMCTA said. Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy had on May 2, announced the removal of Dr. Rajmohan from the post of the Superintendent of SAT Hospital, for "his failure to inform the Government on time about the infection outbreak at the hospital." He was suspended from Medical College service on Tuesday. The KGMCTA said the Government should revoke the suspension of Dr. Rajmohan immediately. It also demanded that the staff pattern in Medical Colleges be revised immediately in accordance with the current patient load in hospitals. The Junior Doctors' Association and the Post Graduates' Association have also decided to join the KGMCTA strike.
