LDF for all-party meeting on colleges issue

Special Correspondent

Option of new legislation to be explored

Vaikkom Viswan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) State committee, which met here on Wednesday, recommended the Government to convene an all-party meeting and hold discussions with the managements of self-financing professional colleges to end the impasse in the higher education sector following the court verdict.

Briefing reporters, LDF convener Vaikkom Viswan said that Education Minister M.A. Baby would take the lead in convening the meeting and holding discussions with the managements. If a new legislation was found to be imperative following the discussions for clearing the confusion in the admission and protecting the reservation and interests of the students, that option too would be explored.

Tourism master-plan

The meeting reviewed the steps taken by the Government to end land grabbing in Munnar. The meeting welcomed the steps taken by the Government to evict encroachers. The Government should act with caution and complete the eviction process in a time-bound manner by deputing more staff. It was proposed to prepare a tourism master-plan to protect the forest cover and conserve the water bodies in the locale.

Mr. Viswan accused former Chief Minister A.K. Antony of sitting on the report on encroachments submitted by ADGP (Operations) Rajan Madekar. The meeting recommended the Government to award compensation to around 200 families that were victims of the Marad riots. It was also decided to organise a public meeting here on May 18 as part of the first anniversary celebrations of the LDF Government.

Public meetings would be held at all district headquarters from May 18 to 30.
