Gulbarga
Staff Correspondent
Gulbarga: Over 200 Congress members, including former Minister Qamar-ul-Islam, were arrested when they tried to lock up government offices in Gulbarga on Wednesday in protest against the inadequate water supply to the city. They were released later. Four teams of protesters laid siege to the offices of the Deputy Commissioner, the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company, the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Gulbarga City Corporation for over an hour.
Slogan shouting
The agitators, holding Congress flags, gathered before these offices and shouted slogans against the Government. Mr. Islam said that the Government had released only Rs. 25 lakh for drinking water supply in Gulbarga though Rs. 2.9 crore was required. He demanded an inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the Bennethora and Bheema drinking water supply schemes.
`Government has failed'
District Congress president Allam Prabhu Patil said that the party would soon organise rallies in all the districts to protest against what he called the total failure of the State Government on all fronts. Former MLA Hanumanthrao Desai, former district party president Sidramapppa Ireddy, district Youth Congress president Nasir Hussein, and party district women's wing president Chandrika Parameshar were among those who led the agitation.
