WITHOUT OFFICIAL SANCTION: The Ambedkar bust installed on the pedestal at Thiruchitrambalam Kootu Road in Villupuram. Photo: T. Singaravelou
VILLUPURAM: A bust of B.R. Ambedkar has suddenly sprung up on the pedestal meant for the Periyar statue on the premises of the Block Development Office at the Thiruchitrambalam intersection in the Vanur block here. The pedestal was constructed for erecting a Periyar statue, but Dalit Panthers of India activists installed Ambedkar's bust on Tuesday night without getting official sanction.
Party flags
They also put up buntings and party flags around the place. When they wanted to garland the newly installed bust, the law enforcement authorities denied them permission. Thol. Thirumavalavan, DPI general secretary, who was on a personal visit to Vanur told The Hindu that some of the enthusiastic cadres had put up the bust. The party would submit a memorandum to the district administration to get formal approval.
