U.P. elections

Perhaps for the first time in years, elections to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly have been conducted peacefully. It is a welcome sign, as peaceful conduct of elections will help to retain people's faith in democracy. In future, the Election Commission should ensure that a larger number of people, particularly those belonging to the marginalised sections, participate in the elections.

Kamlesh Shakta,

Except for some controversies, the election process in the State was free and fair for which the credit goes to the Election Commission. But exit polls have indicated that the BSP will emerge as the single largest party.

One hopes after the results are out, political parties that freely indulged in mudslinging against one another will not enter into unholy alliances with their rivals for power.

Raghavendra R. Pawar,

It looks like there is no escape for the people of Uttar Pradesh from a hung Assembly. The campaigning of almost all the political parties revolved around caste and religion. If the exit polls are to be believed, the BSP will have to depend on smaller parties to form a government. Such a fractured mandate does not augur well for democracy. A lot of give and take at the cost of governance is not a healthy trend.

Inamdar Ramchandra,

The Election Commission's direction to the BJP to openly condemn the inflammatory and derogatory contents of the compact disc distributed on the eve of the elections is apt.
