Bangalore: "There are a lot of issues, both legal and emotional, with regard to reinstating and regularising the services of the 200 daily wage employees of the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU). We will discuss the issue threadbare with the Chief Minister on Thursday," said D.H. Shankaramurthy, Minister for Higher Education.

He was speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the inauguration of a three-day national-level faculty development programme on "Teachers as students in management education" at the Institute of Business Administration and Training School of Management of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology University here on Wednesday.

Regarding opposition to the Chief Minister's visit to the KSOU campus, the Minister said that arguments objecting to and favouring the Chief Minister's action were likely. "But, one must understand the motive behind the Chief Minister's visit. We want to ensure justice to the daily wage employees. The issue will be sorted out in due course," he added.

Inaugurating the programme, Mr. Shankaramurthy said, "In the changing times, we need many competent managers and executives. Training for teachers gains importance in this context." Preparing teachers to train students the right way was important, he said.

"The major drawback is that most of them stop reading once they become teachers," educationist Gururaj Karajagi said.

Prof. Karajagi said that unless the quality of teachers improved, the quality of education would suffer.
